The Toymaker (Chapter IV) by Nimble Ginelle Quinn

Chapter four: In which Brie takes Danielle, Desmond, and Richard into Nightopia and introduces them to the secret society of the sages

Danielle felt like she was going to have a heart attack when she heard what Brie said. “Wh-why would they be after us?!” she stammered. “What’s so different about us that makes Desmond and I targets?”

“It’s very simple, really,” Brie responded, sitting cross-legged. “I hate to break it to you but…you two twins aren’t entirely…100% human…it’s complicated, but I will try to explain.”

Desmond’s mouth dropped open and his eyes got wide. Danielle’s face grew pale and her pupils dilated a little. Richard, who wasn’t paying attention, turned the page in his book, until he looked up. Noticing the bizarre expressions on the faces of his nephew and niece, he glanced up at Brie in confusion.

“We…aren’t actually human?” Desmond hardly breathed. At his question, Richard gasped and grew slightly pale in the face.

“What is the meaning of this?” Richard asked, immediately stopping in his tracks. “You’re just a little stuffed dog; how could you possibly accuse my niece and nephew of being inhuman?!”

“Hey, calm down buddy, what I’m saying is true!” Brie snapped, twirling around in place and fixing Richard with an angry glare. “I was taught by a well-known society member, Mr. Silas Larson. He was the toymaker who created me!”

Richard quieted down and looked away. Danielle cleared her throat, and Brie faced her.

“So if we aren’t exactly human-then what are we?” Danielle asked quietly. “Was Mother or Father…was one of them inhuman, and the other didn’t know?”

“No, your parents were human, but they aren’t your real parents. Your real mother was human, but your real father…he was one of the Sages of Light. Mr. Larson, the society, and I don’t know what happened to them; the council had you sent to replacement parents two days after you twins were born.” After that, Brie stepped past her and continued walking through the woods.

They continued walking in silence, until Desmond began to speak. “If we are part sage, then why do we appear human? Also, do we have any kind of special power? That would be awesome!”

Brie grinned as they reached the edge of the woods. “Desmond, the reason for your looks is simple genetics. One or maybe both of you will grow the flattened horns and metal-like spikes on the back of your head when you grow up. As for the powers, you’ll find out when the time comes.”

They left the woodlands, where all that stood out was the cliff edge of the island. Brie walked over to the edge and with a snap of her fingers, a pulse of blue light left her paw and swirled like a tornado in front of her. When the twister died away, a small skiff lay hovering at the cliff’s edge.

“That is so cool!” Danielle exclaimed, racing aboard as the boarding planks landed on the ground. Desmond and Richard followed her, and once Brie was on board, the toy snapped her fingers again and the planks lifted up.

“Where are we going to go?” Richard asked, looking around the deck with a frown. “I haven’t been anywhere beyond this island before, mostly I have just lived out here with my brother.”

“We’ll be heading to Nightopia, since that is where the Sage’s society is for the time being until they reassemble again,” Brie responded. “You guys will be safe there, and the society can teach the twins how to use their powers.”

She used her magic to raise the anchors, and the skiff hovered into the sky. Brie walked over to the ship’s wheel and spun the skiff around, and the ship sailed off into the sky.

Desmond was slumped against a barrel, fast asleep. He hadn’t gotten much sleep since what had occurred last night, and now he was resting his tired eyes. He had at least 6 hours of sleep before the shadow men broke into the cabin, and at least 4 afterwards.

He felt someone shaking him in his sleep. He tried to ignore the shaking, but whoever was rattling him wasn’t a quitter, and he eventually opened his bleary eyes to see Danielle staring down at him.

“Ah, you’re awake!” Danielle exclaimed happily, giving Desmond the same sweet smile that always annoys Richard. “We’re not in Travis’s cabin anymore! We’re now inside the Darkness, and Nightopia is just ahead! You have to come and see!”

Danielle yanked Desmond to his feet and pulled him over to the edge of the skiff, looking out over the railing and facing the skies beyond. There was pitch black Darkness in every direction, but when the twins turned to the northern face of the sky, they saw a faint glimmer of light in the far distance. The light grew larger and larger, until suddenly there was a brilliant flash, and the rather small but beautiful city of Nightopia lay in front of them, illuminated by the bioluminescent Vespa fireflies and the powerful city street lanterns.

“WOW,” the twins said simultaneously. Their eyes grew wide in amazement as Brie’s skiff was flagged into the docks. The ship settled down gently, and the anchors fell over the edge of the deck and weighed the ship down in the dock. The boarding planks crashed onto the dock, but appeared to be perfectly fine.

Brie hopped down from upper deck as Richard left the indoor ship cabin, both walking down the planks the exact same time as the twins. The group walked through the docks with Brie in the lead until they reached the city gates.

The man at the gates smiled when he saw Brie. “I see another one of Larson’s friends has arrived,” the man said. He leaned next to Brie’s ear and whispered, “Are they the children that the rebels are after?”

“Yes, they are the hybrids,” Brie answered. “The society will be able to keep them safe in Nightopia, will they?”

The man shook his head no. “Sorry, but Nightopia itself isn’t safe. I myself have seen a few rebels lurking about, so they must’ve seen you coming or heard your plans. I know that the society is secretly hiding in Falling Stars, the nearby town just past Red Dawn woods…”

“Red Dawn woods?!” Brie exclaimed silently. “Mason, even you know the horrible legends of that place! The Rebel Sages are bad enough, but we don’t need the Hangman coming after the children as well!”

Mason shrugged at her outburst. “I apologize, but it is the only way for you to go about unseen. The Rebels will mostly think that you’ll take the travel ships or the biolight train, but going through the actual woods is the only safe way.”

Brie shook her head sadly, but eventually looked up at the man and nodded. “If it’s the only way, then it’s the only way. I’ll take my chances with the monster of Red Dawn, just as long as the twins are safe from harm. Oh, and also for the safety of their young uncle here with us.”

Mason smiled sympathetically for the stuffed animal, and he stepped out of the way and let Brie and the others pass. “Good luck with the society,” he called after them.

Brie lead the twins and Richard into town square, where lots of people were riding Vespa fireflies and Kookerams about the place.

“We won’t be staying here by ourselves,” Brie told the twins. “We’re going to the Red Dawn woods, and to Falling Stars.”
