Companion Stats Question

Hello. I have a question concerning companion stats and their critical rates. Here is the experiment:
If, say, a swashbuckler equips a weapon that gets its bonus from strength, his/her critical hit ratio and damage output are relative to the strength because of the bonus from the weapon. However, if said swashbuckler trains a buccaneer, say, Subodai, in agility, Subodai's 2nd greatest stat, would Subodai get his boosts from agility buffs? Not as in if Subodai was in the 3x3 square radius surrounding the caster of an agility buff, but as if he would receive it from more than the 3x3 tiles away like every stat boost.

Post scriptum: If this is not the case, what's the point of even having the "spirited", "agile", and "strong" buffs per companion if they are not able to manipulate them in the slightest?

In the case of Subodai being outside the 3x3 radius, he wouldn't receive that boost to Agility. In team-up situations a companion may get a boost from other captains/companions; that's why I particularly like Privateers.

The rule is this: a companion is boosted off of whatever its highest base stat is after being trained. In theory, yes, you could make Subodai agility based, if and only if, you could make his agility higher than his strength. If you train agile 4, however, he still has higher strength than agility. So, in practice you can't change his stats (unless an update happens that releases the rank 5 and 6 versions of talents to companions).

As for why secondary stats can be trained in the current game? They reduce an enemy's chance of landing a critical on you, provided the enemy is boosted off that stat. That's not really worthwhile, but it technically has a purpose.
