Elizabeth Tudor entered the tavern, feeling somewhat unsure of herself. She had memorized the note that lay crumpled in her pocket, and hovered on the edge of decision. On the one hand, she could refuse the mission, and return to her ship and companions. She had much to do, and the race for the Map pieces had to consume the bulk of her time. There was no higher calling than to stop Kane and prevent him from ever reaching El Dorado. And too, her ship was where she was happy, with her friends, her stacks of books... it was so much her home, her comfort zone, even in dangerous skies.

On the other hand, this mission was expected to complete in a relatively short period of time. It was no grand mission, yet success in it would aid the Resistance and save innocent lives, including the lives of children who otherwise would be targets of the Armada. And surely the Armada would be stopped not merely by the heroism of a pirate, but also the many brave souls who dared oppose this evil.

Yes. She would do it. Elizabeth walked decisively to the bar. The barkeep, idly wiping down the counter with a none-too-clean cloth eyed her with a bored expression.

"I'm here about the dancing lessons," Elizabeth gave the code words easily.

The barkeep's eyes quickly darted about, evidently making sure no one was listening, and gave a jerk of his thumb towards a room that lay to the back of the bar.

A fire blazed merrily on the hearth, and Elizabeth smelled the familiar fragrance of tea -- and more welcomingly for her, hot chocolate -- heating in pots set on low trivets. The people in the room turned to see her as she entered, and Elizabeth saw three strangers: Two Unicorns, one male and one female, and one female human, all dressed elegantly in Valencian style. But even better, Elizabeth saw three of her friends: Emma, Scarlet, and Anne.

Anne jumped to her feet first and ran over to embrace her. "Elizabeth! I'm so glad you are here! This promises to be a splendid adventure!" Anne bubbled excitedly.

OOC: Huzzah! We're finally getting started on a wicked awesome roleplay!

Lizzy smiled and hugged Anne back. "Hey, Anne! I'm glad I'm here too." Lizzy swept her gaze across the room, realizing this obviously wasn't a dance floor. "Ah... so no dance lessons? I'm afraid it's been a while since Jack last taught me how to dance." She winked at her joke, then sat down next to Emma and Scarlet after giving them a hug.

Sam was spending an absolutely splendid afternoon at the Laurentine Library. The clockworks seemed more intent on marching up and down than actively destroying documents or capturing people. The weather was beautiful, and Sam found more than one book to peruse for more information on Marco Pollo. As he headed back to the ship for dinner through the lecture patio, he heard one of the unicorns sigh dramatically.

It was Magdelena Vendelino, the translating expert. "I don't know what to do," she moaned theatrically, actually striking a pose for effect. "Umberto cannot go due to his research," she complained to Gonzago. "I have to get to the masked ball and now there is no one..." her eyes lit upon Sam who had stopped to offer help or sympathy. "Pirate, you have a sheep, do you not?"

"No sheep, but... oh, a ship!" Sam deduced. "Yes madam, I do have that honor. May I place it your disposal?"

"Thank you, dear boy. What are you doing in oh, perhaps a week's time?" She was playfully flirting at him, flitting her fan and casting puppy dog eyes at him. It was all Sam could do not to roll his eyes. Dealing with Magdelena was going to involve taking major acting lessons.

"What is it that you desire, madam?" Sam decided to ask bluntly.

Magdelena looked somewhat dissappointed that her feminine wiles were not working as well as they should. Mind you, the boy was only in his mid-teens. "There is a masked ball on the island of Padova I must attend. Can you find time to attend a party in your busy schedule?"

Time was indeed an issue, but the opportunities that could present themselves from contacts at a Valencian Ball could not be ignored. "I would be delighted to escort you, Maestra Vendelino," Sam bravely volunteered.

"Perfect," she cooed. "Tell me, do you how to dance? Perhaps La Volta?"

(OOC: As I type, I have just entered Aquila and fairly soon Emma will be getting a change of clothes... Sadly, because I love her current outfit. By the time this goes up she'll be in Aquilan gear so I'll write it as such. Bad thing that I hate the Aquilan gear for light armored people... On second thought, it's best Emma wears Marleybonian military apparel. I'm obsessed with military...)

As Elizabeth entered the back room, Emma perked up from her position at watching the bubbling brown mixture of hot chocolate heat to the point where it would be drinkable. The tea, orange spice this time around, was nearly done and shortly would be servable. Pausing her job, the blonde winked and smiled toward the blonde Swashbuckler, saluting in a Marleybonian manner. She took one moment to speak, as she turned to the oven in the room to remove a pie from the radiant heat. A golden brown lattice was spread over a blanket of glistening scarlet cherries which peeked out from the diamond shaped openings. The edges of the pie were tinted with a mocha color, and altogether it looked beautiful. Emma placed it on the table behind her, and grinned happily at Lizzy once more, getting to her feet as she walked up to the Swashbuckler.

"Long time no see, my friend,' Emma greeted happily. "I see we've both done great services to Marleybone recently!" She exclaimed, pointing to the golden badge on her violet sash excitedly. The Musketeer was dressed in traditional Marleybonian Admiral attire- complete with the array of white feathers on her hat and the badges on her sash. The jacket she wore appeared quite official- golden shoulder additions, a skirt, which could come as a surprise to the group, as Emma loathed skirts, and even the navy blue boots. "I'm now doing work in Aquila as a mission for recovery of Marco Pollo's map and such. I hate the clothing though- Cool Ranch and Marleybone were definitely more my style." The blonde shook hands with her friend and then gave her a hug as a symbol that she'd missed her.

As word spread through Valencia of the masquerade ball, Quentin discovered an invite to the ball in one of Bernard's clockwork pigeons.

Quentin: A masquerade ball?

Invitation: Dear Sir or Madam,
You are cordially invited to a luxurious masquerade ball. This ball will be attended by supporters of The Armada and the Resistance alike. The theme of this ball is steampunk, and the dress code is mandatory. You are allowed to bring any guests you like, but you must have the invite in order to enter, otherwise you will not be able to enter the party. There will be music, dancing, a wonderful buffet spread, the finest yum in the Spiral, and the most greatest of security the Spiral has to offer. Masks are highly mandatory for this party, and the ball will last until midnight on the 31st of October. We look forward to see who will be attending.

Signed: The Clockwork Court

Quentin: Looks like I have a party to attend. Valona darling, would you like to come with me to the masquerade ball here in Valencia?

Valona: Of course I would, I told your brothers to not wait up. We will be back after we rob the Armada supporters of their money.

Quentin: Excellent, lets head out.

Quentin and Valona took their Limousine Speedboat as their choice of transportation to the party. They were dressed up in their finest steampunk attire, ready for anything with their hidden weapons.

Sam, your're joining the roleplay?

YAY!!! *does funny little dance, then glances upward, embarrassed*

Hehehe... well, I'm glad that you'll be going to the dance as well. This seems to be a little bit more of a serious roleplay, as these girls are throwing themselves into the arms of strangers to spy on the enemy, your humor would definitely keep this roleplay light and fun. So far, it already has, as I've had to try hard not to chuckle, for my dad currently needs the household to be quiet. (Wait... how does he deal with my machine-gun typing?). Anywho, looking forward to your future posts in this roleplay!

Also, I like your little reference to 16-century dancing. La Volta is a leaping and turning dance for couples ( I imagine before the first partner dance where bodies stay connected, known as the Waltz), originating in Italy and popular in French and German balls. It was a respectable dance, although never completely dignified, after Queen Elizabeth (Queen Elizabeth II is who I named my character after, which is awesome that this name is connected to this dance) danced it with Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. I'm personally looking forward to writing the dance La Volta.

Looking forward to your future roleplay posts!

"Ooh, congratulations on reaching Aquila, Emma!" Lizzy smiled, returning her friend's hug. She chuckled. It was just like Emma to wear Marleybonian militia wear every spare chance she got. Then her eyes widened as she backed away from her. "Another map piece? In Aquila?" Lizzy breathed out calmly, trying to channel the nerves that just spiked up. "When you retrieve it, would you mind too much letting me study it for a little while? My parents died while trying to reach El Dorado, so it would be kinda big for me to succeed in the mission that they couldn't. I promise that I will return the map piece once I've memorized it." Lizzy rubbed the back of her neck. It would be more than 'kinda big'. It would be huge. Lately now, more than ever, she's been missing her parents and had been doing a lot more research at libraries than usual, hoping to find any clue as to where the other map pieces are. She only had one, and it was one that her adoptive bear mother had given her, but she needed more than one map piece to reach El Dorado. But what will I do after I find El Dorado? Lizzy left no room for failure in her plan, but, she couldn't help thinking about what might happen after her mission in life is complete. She snapped out of her own thoughts when she smelt a strong whiff of hot chocolate. She smiled. I can worry about this later... for now, I'm going to spend some time with my friends.

Scarlet looked up from her place near the fire place and smiled warmly at Lizzie,
"Salut mon ami! Unfortunatly zer appear to be no dancing instructors 'ere." Scarlet said in a thicker than normal Polarian accent. "However, zese Valencians 'ave somezing to say I think, but, zey 'ave been very quiet so far." Scarlet continued as she pushed another large armchair nearer to the fire for Lizzy.

The startled group heard some muffled thumps and bumps and a faint giggle. The door slowly opened and walking backwards dragging an insulated crate was a Captain dressed in gold and purple. She maneuvered her load through the door and peeked under her arm at the shocked expressions on the faces in the room. Another giggle escaped her lips and she turned around and they all breathed a sigh of relief when they saw it was that it was only their dear friend Chrissy Nightingale. "Sorry about the commotion out there, someone tried to make off with my surprise load & I had to change their mind for them." She sniffed the air appreciatively an said, "I thought I smelled cherry pie. I brought Ice Cream, freshly shall we say, lightened from an disabled Armada galley ship."
Her little speech gave the shocked room the time it need to recover and they all shouted in unison, "CHRISSY!" and they all rushed to her with a group hug. Chrissy laughed at all the love and gestured at her insulated crate to Emma and said "I hear that Ala Mode is the newest rage in the fanciest Polarion restaurants and I just knew you would be dieing to try it. I don't know who that Armada ship stole it from but I am sure they were not planning on serving it to their prisoners so I took it off their hands and Gracie had just the equipment to keep it cold for me for my mission." She glanced around the room and one eyebrow went up. "I see that I am not the only one that has been approached about 'ahem' dancing lessons?" "Anyone have any idea what is up?"

(OOC: O yes, I love la Volta! Sam and I [the players, not the characters of course] once had the opportunity to dance this, and it is great fun. The highlight of it is when, after you have been jumping about, the lady puts her hands on the gentleman's shoulders, and jumps up with all her strength. At the same time, the gentleman seizes the front of her stays (which are very stiff and come to a bit of point) and uses this to propel her into the air, the propulsion assisted by giving her a gentle boot with his knee and thigh on her behind... (you can see why some people in society rather raised their eyebrows concerning the propriety of this dance). Anyway, the lady shoots right into the air, which is very exhilarating! For a brief moment, it feels as if you are flying! It is a highly energetic dance, I must say, and when we had breath to discuss it, we laughed to think the jumpy, skippy galliarde part of the dance was the rest period!)

Lizzy retreated from hugging her friend so that the others could reach her, then laughed a little nervously. If anyone was going to tell Chrissy what this was about, it wasn't going to be her, because if Lizzy tried to tell Chrissy, chances were she would really end up only psyching herself out of the mission. No, best to let the others do the explaining. Lizzy slunk over to her armchair by the fire and sipped some hot chocolate to help calm her nerves.

(Love the 'Polarian accent' you have developed, Scarlet! )

"Ice cream? Crème de glace?" Anne's eyes opened very wide with considerable interest. She had been very much looking forward to that lovely cherry pie Emma was allowing to cool, but now there was something to add to such a lovely treat? She then had her first taste of ice cream atop a piece of the desired cherry pie. Anne gave herself up to pure bliss. For a long moment there was no war, no Armada, no map, no danger or threat of death, just the enjoyment of the heavenly union of two perfect treats.

After the pie and ice cream had been happily devoured by the present population of the back tavern room, the Unicorn woman rose gracefully to her feet. "I believe we are all assembled," she began, smiling and making a grace curtsey to the newcomers. "I am Dona Graziella Albioni di Padova, and I thank you all so very much for coming to the aid of the Valencian Resistance. Believe me, we are most grateful. Also with me are is Signor Filippo and Maestra Lia, who will be accompanying you on your journey to Valencia." The two smiled and rose, to give a polite courtesy in response.

"Let me give you some background to your mission," Dona Graziella continued. "There are many in Padova, as in the rest of Valencia, that believe the Armada is enabling a strong and prosperous Valencia, and so fully support Kane and his surface agenda. Many others rightly fear the Armada and dare not act against them, and indeed it is becoming dangerous to even speak against them. Finally, there are those who believe the Armada is evil, and that they will cause the eventual destruction of Valencia, and actively oppose them."

"The Duca and Duchessa Vinaldi, present heads of a leading family of Padova, have been secretly supporting the Resistance for some years. Openly, they try to provide a measured voice as members of the governing Council of Padova. However, open criticism, even though politely stated, is often frowned upon these dark days, and even mild dissent has put them under suspicion."

"A few weeks ago, one of our covert missions went badly awry. Duca Tomasso Vinaldi manage to salvage some of the mission and save several lives, at the expense of destroying his cover. He has been forced to flee while the Duchessa attempts to maintain the image of a family loyal to the State. Duchessa Alcina publicly protests any connection to the Resistance, and maintains that her husband has been away on family business."

"The Doge, the leader of the Council, is known as a strong supporter of the Armada. He has placed spies on the Vinaldi family, but Duchessa and her younger children remain in seclusion at their country estate, avoiding any contact with the Resistance."

"The Doge seems to want an end to this subtle game, couched in an innocent-seeming invitation to a masked ball..."

Chrissy, while chatting excitedly with all her cherished friends fielded questions left and right as to what she had been up to, kept herself busy unpacking the ice cream. No easy task considering all the machinery she had to shut down first according to a very worried Gracie's list of instructions. It seems that the refrigerant she used wasn't fully tested and had a tendency to be a bit unstable if not handled properly. Gracie wanted to accompany her to the meeting to keep things safe (as if she couldn't trust me to handle things carefully, mused Chrissy) but her Captain assured her that this meeting was so critical and top secret that she would only risk herself in going.
The machine gave a very startling but satisfactory hiss as she completed the last step and she gave a relaxing sigh that she had done things properly. She was surprised at the tension release that all was well, hmm guess Gracie really unnerved me with all her dire warnings if I didn't shut this down right.
As she started to lift out the ice cold container she saw Scarlet heading towards her and heard her passionate request. "Oh Scarlet I am sure that Emma has the perfect serving dishes for this to make it look oh so elegant and just imagine it melting over a still steaming piece of pie." she began to say but at the look of disappointment in her cherished friends eyes, not to mention the mournful droop of her spoon as she registered Chrissy's attempt to block early tasting, Chrissy's heart melted faster than any creme de glace ever could and could not refuse such longing.
"Of course she whispered conspiratorially, please take a 'quality control' sample" she grinned mischievously back. "After all this has to be verified as the real deal ."
She was rewarded with a blinding smile from Scarlet that warmed her heart and overflowed right down to her toes. Scarlet dipped in her spoon and as she tasted it Chrissy watched the nostalgic emotions flit across her face as Scarlet's taste buds danced with joy.

One of Quentin's Atherton Industry brand clockwork pigeons overheard this conversation. Quentin was shocked to hear that Valencians were having their information violated by Armada spies.

Quentin: Valona, it seems like we have a side mission to complete.

Valona: Kill every single spy that is spying on the Vinaldi family and capture The Doge in the process?

Quentin: How did you know?

Valona: You had your earpiece on the speaker setting.

Quentin: Oh -turns off speaker setting-, time to have a little fun at the ball.

Valona: I have contacted your brothers, they will meet us at Padova once we arrive. They're dressed in their finest attire.

Quentin ordered the driver to speed up the Speedboat, while he ordered the pigeon to keep a close ear on Chrissy and her friends.

Lizzy smiled warmly and graciously accepted some ice cream, which made her teeth jolt when she felt the cold, but she had a happy expression on her face as she gazed into the fire. She paid keen attention to everything the Unicorns said, silently nursing on her cup of hot chocolate, and listened to the entire speech made about Padova. It was hard to frown, with Chrissy's bubbling, happy energy in the room -- but somehow Lizzy managed, and the crackling light of the fire gave her an aged look. This ball sounded pretty dangerous, and Lizzy was getting cold feet. Well, she always has cold feet, but in this instance her cold feet are metaphorical. Somewhat. The little happiness that her friends had given her dissipated, and she was back to that sad little pale girl crouched in a huge chair. It was really hard to concentrate on the mission at hand, as tomorrow would be the 9th year that she was without her parents. Around this time of the year she always seemed to be abnormally sober, but never before had she had friends present. She hated them having to see her like this, thus she tried to hide these emotions, but her eyes were a dead giveaway. Lizzy stroked her cup of hot chocolate, her ice cream now completely melted, and gazed at her group of friends without really seeing them, waiting to see how they reacted to the mission.

We might meet some day at a ballroom dance (I, for one, love to go to those), or at a KI Convention, or at the grocery store. Or, we might have already met and not even know yet. "The Doge expects the Vinaldi family to attend the ball," Dona Graziella continued. "His invitation, though polite, hints in no uncertain terms that to refuse to attend would be behavior most suspicious, and perhaps worthy of arrest as potential traitors. However, if the Vinaldi family goes, it is almost certain that the ball would serve as a cover to secretly arrest the family members present. Duca Vinaldi would then have to surrender himself to the Doge -- and the Armada. And it would be for nothing, for his wife and children would not be released, even so."

"This is our plan: we will covertly rescue the children while volunteers don masks and take on the roles of the Vinaldi youngsters at the ball. Duchessa Alcina refuses to have a double, as she believes that the deception will have a higher chance of success if she is there to lend it veracity. We have a Resistance member who is able to take on the role of her son, but the four daughters are adopted. They are human, and it is their roles, as well as their lady's maid, we would like you brave captains to take on."

Graziella turned to Scarlet. "You are tall, and I believe you would do best taking on the identity of the oldest girl, 16-year-old Isabella. The next oldest, Kara, is 15, and you would be a good match for her, Emma," Graziella nodded to the musketeer. She then looked at Elizabeth and Anne. "It is a blessing that you two captains are small of stature, as you can convincingly play the role of 13-year-old Mariella," she told Lizzie, who stood just over five feet, "and you, Anne, the role of little Violetta, age 11." Anne nodded in willing acceptance, although her cheeks burned. She lacked a full inch to five foot tall, and it was always embarrassing to be seen as younger than she actually was.

"And Chrissy," Graziella turned her attention to the last captain, "You will take on the role of Lucia, a human woman of a respected middle class family who became an attendant to the young ladies when she took service with Vinaldis at the age of 12, a standard age to begin service in Valencia. As their trusted lady's maid, you would be expected to accompany them to the ball. As it is a masked ball, you would also be permitted to dance as well, but your real job would be to keep an eye on your charges. We will have people at the ball to watch for danger, but as you would not be under constant watch -- unlike the other captains here -- you would have more of a chance to watch for trouble yourself, and more flexibility in what you are able to get away with," the Valencian Unicorn finished with a slightly somber smile.

Lizzy nodded with gracious acceptance at being a middle child. Although she was older than 13, her optimistic attitude and usually staying out of the sun in exchange for a good book in a library kept her looking really young, as if someone who had just turned 13. It made sense, and not just because of her small size.

But something shining in the firelight caught Lizzy's eye.

With a yelp that resembled an omega dog being bitten by its alpha, Lizzy gracelessly scrambled over the seat in which she sat and peered over it and at the shiny thing.

This unexpected show bought everyone's attention, for they all turned to her with a curious expression on their faces.

She blushed, but she pointed a quivering finger at the shiny thing in the corner of the room. It was very difficult to see, and it probably would have gone unnoticed throughout the entire meeting if Lizzy hadn't built up as good a peripheral vision as if she was directly looking at something.

It was a clockwork bird.

Lizzy breathed a sigh of relief, though, when she realized that it wasn't the kind that had planted itself all over the Valencian library. "G-g-g-guys? What do we do with it?" She came out from behind the chair, walked in front of the fireplace (casting a large shadow on the others as she walked by), and placed her hands in front of the bird. The bird cooed and after pecking at her fingers a little, hopped onto her hand. Lizzy carefully and gently swung her hands around for the others to see.

Engraved on the underside of its belly were two letters, AI. "Atherton Industries." Lizzy remembered having heard the name while she was in Sivella. She stroked the bird's head and it pressed up against her finger in appreciation, in which case Lizzy began to feel a little better. Although she hated for anyone to be spying on her friends, it was hard to get past the precious little face of the clockwork bird. She raised her hands near her face and looked it in the eye.

"Hello, Quentin." Lizzy said with a wink.

The mechanical bird cooed back in response.

The Masquerade was in full swing, Quentin had just arrived with Valona. Quentin's brothers were anxiously waiting at the front door of the palace.

Quentin: What amazing outfits you guys.

Bernard: Thank you, now it's time for us to enter.

The group donned on their masks and entered the palace. Everyone was in fabulous outfits.

Griffin: The Vinaldi family went all out for this ball.

Valona: Indeed, good thing we are all expert dancers.

Alexander: One problem though, who are we going to dance with?

Quentin: Find the most beautiful ladies you can find with great personalities. Remember, we are here to not just sabotage the Armada support group, but to kill their spies and capture The Doge.

Chrissy heard the whole thing, she went on over to tell Dona of the arrival of the Athertons.

Chrissy: Dona, we have a problem that might jeopardize the plan.

Dona: What would that be?

Chrissy: It seems Quentin and his family have arrived, and they have planned to kill the spies and capture the Doge.

Dona: Those nitwits! If Kane takes notice he will blame the Vinaldi family and have them all hunted down and executed! You need to keep Quentin busy, I'll keep his fiance away.

Chrissy followed Quentin through the ballroom until Quentin headed inside the library. Chrissy sneaked up behind Quentin and pinned him against the wall.

Chrissy: What are you doing here rich boy?!

Quentin: Same as you, trying to save the Vinaldi family. Now let go of my arm.

Meanwhile back at the ballroom, Dona was following Valona. Valona noticed her and turned around.

Valona: Hello, what is your name?

Dona: Dona Graziella.

Valona: Hello Dona, I'm Valona. Now tell me what you're up to.

Dona: What, I'm up to nothing really.

Valona: Don't try to lie, I catch on quickly.

Dona (thinking): Darn, she is good, but not good enough.

Dona: Would you like to join me for some tea?

Valona: Sure, if it will get you to tell the truth.

Dona:

Back at the library.

Chrissy: Your plan may be well thought out, but didn't you take in the account that once Kane notices, he will blame the Vinaldi family and have them all executed?

Quentin: Ugh, no I haven't. Thanks for telling me. Maybe we can work together to lead Kane off both of our trails.

Chrissy: I'm listening.

Quentin: Simple, we combine out plans and make a few adjustments. Then once we offed the spies, we will pin the whole mess on the Doge, and he will be the one taking the heat and the execution from Kane.

Chrissy: Interesting compromise, but will it work?

Quentin: Lets just pray that it will.

OOC: I dunno, Quentin... it seems highly unlikely that you will be able to have a pigeon spying on Chrissy et al, as they are meeting with Resistance people who have survived this long by making it difficult to spy on them. Note that the girls and the Resistance volunteers are in a back room, no windows, only accessible via the barkeep (possibly a secret trap door is in the room in case of emergencies, but you can bet that it has been carefully checked out and is being watched, as well as the entrance to the room). Paranoid? You bet. The Armada is not to be idly messed with, and a slip-up on their part could well prove lethal.

So you don't know what is going on in the tavern. What do you know? Being an upper class Valencian, even though Padova is not your home island, you probably know some of the people and politics. Very possibly you have contacts, especially among the upper class, perhaps know a son or daughter of one of the ruling Council, perhaps even a member of the Doge's extended family (indeed, that could be why you got an invitation). Padova is the home of a prominent university; you may have studied there. You probably know the Doge is a supporter of the Armada... but, on the other hand, almost everybody says they are supporters of the Armada. Being a member of the Resistance is illegal; if anyone is believed to be a member of the Resistance, they are arrested as traitors. Even openly protesting against Kane and the Armada is likely to get one arrested... or perhaps worse, quietly 'disappear'.

Living in Valencia, you know that where politics is concerned, you can not completely trust anyone. Someone who rants against Kane might be daring to express their true opinions, or they might be inviting you into a trap that will get you seized as a traitor. You are living in a lot of uncertainty. Your ordinary information routes may not be trustworthy. The good thing is that you will know a lot more about Valencian life than the captains who are suddenly donning the roles of doubles, and you can walk in with confidence and contacts (and already know the dances!). The bad thing is, you will probably not know much about the plot they are involved in until much later...
