Gallant Defense

Hey pirates of the Spiral! I was wondering how do you use Gallant Defense? It was that you 'intercept and attack directed to and adjacent ally' but how? Plus when it is used 'Gaurded' comes up on me instead of the person I used it on and it doesn't say how long it lasts. I don't know if this is a bug or something i don't understand. Please explain to me how to use this skill. Thanks
