Why does Swashbuckler get this ability when they can't tank and are meant to avoid getting hit thats why they have the quiet abilities. Buccaneer are suppose to be tanks with loud, hold the line, and the damage reduction abilities. Giving gallant defense to Swashbucklers would make as little sense as giving taunt to the storm school in wizard101.

Because Swashbucklers have the best dodge ( or ought to ). You get this power before you get first strike or riposte, however once you have these powers Gallant Defense is useful to protect your companions ( just don't use it amid a crowd of musketeers or witchdoctors! ).

The only reason I can think of is that Swashbucklers are flamboyant and derring do type characters that might throw themselves in front of an attack on a Companion to save them (especially a Witchdoctor who might have lower hit points).

I agree that it would make more sense for Buccaneers to have Gallant Defense since they have the most Hit Points (usually).

It's the swashbuckler mythos at work. Sure, buccaneers are tougher, but they're the workhorse of the pirate world, putting their heads down and getting stuck in. Swashbucklers are flashy and dance around the decks calling attention to themselves, the quarterhorse to your buccaneer's Clydesdale. They dart in and dodge attacks and leap lightly aside and generally drive the hardworking crew crazy, but they are also saddled with that chivalrous part of the mythos, so they must leap in to defend the er, defenseless.

With their high dodge and retaliatory attacks, the gallant defense makes sense. They intercept (and avoid) a blow, then get to riposte.

Use it around your 'squishier' companions to keep them alive and to give your swashbuckler some extra swings at an enemy. Keep the swashbuckler away from the heavier-hitting crew members and co-pirates who have things like vengeance strike so they get a chance for that to trigger.
