Roleplay - A Masked Ball in Padova

The room would have been pitch black were it not for the light of a single candle in the center of the table. It was an ancient solid piece, made of mahogany, and had seen many meetings around it's well-scarred surface. But there were no drinks to be spilled, no grease to be wiped up, not even a casual crumb to be brushed to the floor. Around the circumference sat seven people - all masked, hooded and otherwise hidden within their robes. Each thought he or she knew the identities of the others, but there was no way to sure. And no one would ever testify in court that they themselves had been present at such an event.

"All goes more or less according to plan," the first to speak announced. The voice was grating and hard on the ear. "Aside from Signore Vinaldi's location, everyone of import is accounted for. I see no problems ahead of us."

"That's not what I've heard," a second voice countered, this one smooth and silky. "Rumor has it that..."

"That's just normal politics in Padova." A third cut in brusquely. "Rumors are exactly that, rumors. Either things are as planned, or they are not. Do we proceed? I call for a vote."

"Aye, we haven't time for nonsense at this stage. I second," a fourth agreed, oiliness oozing from the words.

All the voices around the table cast an 'Aye'. With no dissension, the meeting was swiftly adjourned. Then one by one the members departed - according to tradition for their clandestine group, so none could discover another's identity.

When they were down to the last two, the second hindmost addressed the final attendee. "I have heard that many outlanders will be attending this year's Ball. I do hope that doesn't throw a Monquistan in the works, so to speak."

A throaty chuckle preceeded the response. "No fear. I believe they will have their hands full with our mechanical... allies." Then both laughed good-naturedly as a hand reached out and snuffed the candle's flame. The tunnels under Padova were again pitch as night.

(Sorry if this thaws things out of whack. I had to renew my membership and this is a really good time to bring in Hobbes. Here goes…)

"Ahh, such compassion in these dark days. Especially for dear Maestra Lia." cooed a mysterious gentleman from behind them. When they spun around, they came face-to-face with a peculiar unicorn. he was midnight black with a ivory colors horn wearing what Jack thought looked eerily similar as to the W101 Tournament garment, but with silvery white baggy sleeves and a sword, pistol bat his side, but cleverly hidden in a Piratic sort of way. What drew Chrissy's attention was the crest of a sword, dagger and pistol in a six-pointed star that was engraved on the side of the strange music box.
"Oh, my apologies, but I have forgotten to introduce myself. my name is Alexandro Fonte from Siena. I have come for the same reason as many other nobles but I have noticed some peculiar things occurring in this beautiful place."
Lord Fonte quickly glances to check their privacy. Finding all to be well, he whispered "I know there is some one who is following your movements. Beware, the Court of Miracles is converging upon Padova this night. watch your step and beware the shifting pigments of pictures. Also, I was walking through the bushes and could not resist to hear that three might be some real danger for the Sivella professor. could it be you are apart of it."
"Coincidence?" grinned the Unicorn at their reactions, his voice becoming more serious and dark "For your sake I hope not. Watch your tongue and thoughts. Intrigue is unforgiving and could unravel what plans you have. Thing are never what they seem. And remember this: only confront powerful people when summoned."
The Lord then laughed a wee bit, like he was in on some joke
"I almost forgot," chuckled he with a playful, light monotone "The Hoodoo Queen, Jesting Lord, and Undead Obeah may cross paths in your plans, especially with those of the Vindali."
Alexandro's smile vanished . He had spoken too much. Then an Armada sentinel walked past them, not bothering to even notice them. When they turned back to the suspicious man, he was gone. only a penent of his crest and a black unicorn mask remained.
Dona Graziella felt much shaken. She was a well-educated woman, priding herself on her rationality, good sense, and skill at rhetoric, all of which served her well as she represented her district in the Senate. Increasing concerns over the power of the Armada had led her first into sympathy with the Resistance, and eventually frustrations and fears over the Powers-that-Be led her into actually working for the Resistance. Like Maestra Lia, she was no warrior, but she had skills and connections which were useful to smooth out difficult situations and gather information.

It was Graziella who had first discovered the plot against the Vinaldi family -- not enough evidence to confront the Doge, but certainly enough to find out that the family was being well watched and thus difficult to spirit away to safety. It had not been her idea to ask the young pirates to impersonate the Vinaldi children, but she had approved and volunteered to seek them out. Partly because she was eager to do something more than intrigue, argument, and paperwork, but a large part was out of curiosity. Rumor had it that a young pirate had been not only valiantly defying the Armada, but had been spectacularly successful in doing so. Graziella had doubted at first that the pirates she met, so very young as to be hardly more than children, were worthy of the rumors. But she had seen them at practice combat, seen them quick and focused on their lessons, whether Valencian politics or the flirtacious language of fans, and knew they were something special. Even with the disaster of her friend being arrested, Graziella had every confidence that the plan would work. The pirates would successfully pull off the deception, the Vinaldi children could then be spirited away under cover, and should the Doge try to pull off the expected plot at the Ball, he would find his plan thwarted by the skillful offices of those he thought to be innocent children and servants.

But now... if Conte Tori disturbed her, Signore Fonte had shaken her further. What was the Court of Miracles? What did it mean to beware the shifting pigments of pictures? Was he the progenitor of that mysterious music box? And how did he know of the business with the Vinaldis -- and how much? This seems to be matters of magic, her mind informed her, troubled. Magic represented the wild, the chaotic forces of nature, which had no business in the rational enterprises of people. And Chrissy had felt something, too, when Graziella had been arguing with the Doge.

Graziella repressed a shiver. Magic could alter all the dealings here, and tip the balance -- but which way? Magic was no friend to the Armada, but to what purpose came this magic? And even if benign -- could it be controlled and not harm the ones it was supposed to help?

She bit back a sigh. At least soon they would be at her home, with a pleasant supper, and music -- and perhaps hopefully some answers from those musicians also...

[OOC: Thanks Anne. Mice of Brambly Hedge sounds like something I've read a while ago and have unfortunatly forgotten, I think it's time to search through the furthest corners of my library again. I highly recomend visiting Quebec City at least once for the Winter Carnival, it does feature a widely known ice carving contest featuring artists from around the world, or at least the Northern Hemisphere. Winter Carnical does also feature an Ice Palace that is built every year to house Bonhomme Carnival, the festival's ambassador. The Ice Palace is different every year, sometimes bigger, sometimes smaller, but it is always build as an actual Palace that visitors are welcomed to walk through. I'm not sure where, but I know there is also an Ice Hotel built near Quebec City at the same time for tourists to actually stay in.]

Sam Underhill on Nov 16, 2013 wrote:
"You realize you've never told me your name," Sam gently queried his new companion.

"No, I didn't," the blonde girl smiled back, as they reached the bottom of the stairway. Carved into the wall there was a oversized Panther's face . A small slit was hidden in the shadows of the Panther's maw. "This used to be a place where citizen's could contact the Council by feeding a note within, usually to denounce someone. No one knows who picked up the messages, but within a week or so, things might begin to happen to certain families whose political ambitions collided with others." She was no longer smiling, but looked concerned. "While these... communications are no longer in use, I have to wonder what would happen if a name was placed in its mouth."

"You would denounce Magdelena!" Sam was shocked.

"She has no need to, pirate," a deep voice came from the shadows. Sam could barely make out a figure standing by one of the columns. "Your Resistance friend is leading you on a dangerous course. You might find it wise to alter your plans and pass on this Ball. It is, of course, your decision."

"Is that a threat?" Sam didn't know how many others might be lurking down here, and quickly began weighing his options.

"By no means. You are free to choose your own path. But are you capable of choosing wisdom, or simply folly? Enjoy your visit to Padova, young pirate. Let us hope it not your last. Addio." The figure retreated deeper into the shadow. Straining his eyes Sam could see the beginnings of a large, underground, catacomb-like system of tunnels. Who needed streets, when you had these? Mind you it could make for an easier trip back to the Black Star if necessary.

"Shall I escort you back upstairs?" the girl asked. Yet again, she had materialized at his side without his noticing.

"I think I can find my way, thank you," Sam frostily retorted.

"You might wish to be careful. You could get lost down here quite easily. At least without a guide. Think on it." She gave a delicate curtsey, backed away several steps, then stood watching him. Disconcerted, Sam turned his back on her and returned upstairs.

Once at the top, he turned to go back to the librarian's party and ran head on into yet another Unicorn. "Careful, boy. You don't want to get hurt." The Unicorn stepped aside to let Sam through.

"Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" he heard shouted out as he approached the party room.

"NO!" came the united response, followed by uproarious laughter. The party was in full swing now. Sam wasn't sure he could face that ordeal yet, so he found a bench and parked himself to think.

"So why are you doing this?" Sam actually jumped as he found the girl seated next to him. "You're not in love, you're not a member of the Resistance, although you do sympathize, and you don't know Professor Deluca. What is in this for you?" She looked puzzled and curious, not at all accusatory.

And worst of all, Sam wasn't sure what the answer was.
"I've not enjoyed myself like that for quite some time," Magdelena told Sam when she found him sitting in the foyer of the Museo di Libri. She had a healthy looking shine to her that Sam had never seen before. But the blonde girl had been quite right - he wasn't in love. He deeply respected the Unicorn and treasured her abilities, but as for love - no. Speaking of the girl...

"Where did she go?" Once again, the human minx had vanished.

"Who?"

"Oh, never mind. Did you know about the tunnels below this place?"

"Of course, that is the underground or catacombs. Only the desperate or insane go down there. It is very dangerous. You don't propose to traverse them, do you?"

"It's just nice to have options. Is your party over?"

"Gracious, no. But I noticed you weren't there, so I came to find you." She sat next to Sam and put on a pretty pout. "I missed you."

Only Sam's reflexes prevented the knife from actually hitting Magdelena. He caught it against his sleeve rebounding it into the wall. He raced up and quickly ran to the corner it had been thrown around. All Sam saw was a crowd of partygoers chatting amongst themselves, no one moving out of character. He returned to Magdelena, who was examining the knife curiously.

"This is so dull it could hardly cut toast," she commented. "I would have a pretty bruise if not for you, but harm me, I think not." She handed it hilt first to Sam and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. "Thank you, if this had been real..." she gave an involuntary shudder.

The weapon itself was unadorned. No crest, no jewels, the type you could buy a dozen for a single gold piece in any market. "Well, someone just warned me off against going to the Ball, and now it seems they don't want you to attend either. Your boyfriend? Some anti-Resistance group? Or just book haters?"

"Michaelangelo would never harm me," she mused, then catching herself, "not physically, anyway." Their eyes met, and she confided. "All right, fine. He is an agent, and I am... fond of him. I'm sorry to have led you on."

"He's quite lucky to have you care for him," Sam told her, and meant it. "However, someone is still unhappy with us. Any ideas?"

"Far too many. We can start with the entire Council, the Doge's agents, book haters..." They laughed together breaking the tension. "This Ball can't come and end soon enough. Next time I am simply coming as a guest to enjoy myself. I shall leave the plotting to others."

"Right, and pigs can fly," Sam retorted.

"Actually in Mooshu, it is reported that there is a Valley of Flying Pigs. Mind you, no one has ever substantiated such a story."

Sam laughed. "Fine. You're not hurt, but I suggest it is time to leave this place."

"You do not hate me?" Large, puppy-dog eyes accompanied this query.

"No, actually I'm relieved. Being the girlfriend of a pirate would not suit you." He smiled to show it was meant in teasing, although privately he thought it perfectly true.

Alura looked into Katerina's eyes and saw how concerned she was for her grandmother. '' Awww I can't let her down. I just can't! Even if it means being insulted. '' She thought with a growing urge to protect Beatrice. Alura took a deep breath and smiled at her new friend. '' I'll keep an eye on her no matter what, Katerina. I promise no harm will come to your grandmother at the Ball if I'm there.''
Alura and Katerina once again joined the others at tea, though a pitcher of iced lemonade had been added to the tea tray as an alternative beverage for their guest. Conversation continued in a light fashion, the countess having no idea she had given offense, as none was intended. But the old Unicorn shrewdly recognized that this young would-be protector was hot-headed and volatile -- ah, she had been that way also in her youth-- and in ignorance of the situation. Beatrice looked at Alura steadily.

"My granddaughter fears for me, though I do not believe her fears are justified. I am an old woman. Who would gain by killing me? All my wealth will be hers to inherit."

"But what of your position on the Council, grandmamma?" Katerina pointed out somberly.

Beatrice inclined her head. "That is true. Katerina is too young to take my place. You see, Miss Alura, Padova like the rest of Valencia is ruled by King Casimir, but our local government is more of a republic. At the top is the Grand Duke, the Doge. While his reign is usually for life, it is not a hereditary title. Instead each Doge is elected from the elite Council, usually one of the Council members. The Doge must have the majority of the Council approve major decisions. The Council in turn is advised by the Senate."

"Typically, the Council members are chosen from the great families of Padova. If they give up the office or die, then usually the Doge chooses another of their extended family to replace them -- unless of course there has been scandal or significant protest. The Senate - which has elected members from all the districts in Padova - must approve the new appointees. Often the new Council appointees come from the Senate."

"Who would the Doge appoint should you... uh... pass on?" Evalina spoke up.

Beatrice took another sip of tea, and then smiled. "Goodness, how would I know? Nicolo Foscari, the Doge, is a subtle man. Sadly, my children are dead." For a moment she looked sad and old. "With no family member to follow me, the most likely candidates are Ginevra Tassi -popular in the Senate as a skillful orator-, or Enrico Sariano, who has plenty of influence thanks to all the money he throws around," Beatrice commented with a distainful sniff. "Possibly the Doge might consider his secretary, Benvolio Ariosto, for the position, as it is well known that Doge thinks highly of him. He's of a good family, a trifle young though, and the Doge would lose a good secretary if he did make him a Council member."

"But the Doge could always rely on his supporting vote, if Ariosto was appointed," Katerina reflected.

"My dear child, he could certainly rely on almost anyone he appointed. That toad, Sariano, for instance would agree with anything the Doge said as long as some power filtered down."

But here their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of the mantua-maker, glover, and milliner who had been called to help prepare Alura for the ball...

Alura's thought was cut off by the entrance of three new guests. She guessed that they were here for her new wardrobe and didn't bother asking anymore embarrassing questions. Alura straightened her back and erased all the uncertainty from her gaze, trying to make herself look a bit more proper. '' Hello everyone, how are you today? '' She said politely. With any luck, she'll have the politeness and acceptable behavior for the ball before her outfit was even done.

the Cour des Miracles varies depending on where you are but the constant theme is that it is a gathering of gypsies, vagabonds, rouges, and anyone else who lives outside the norms of society. Though not as large as the Valencian Brotherhood and no where near as influential as the Frogfather's gang, it is a caldron of all walks of life and work in a powerful yetMagicians, Seers, Mercenaries, Master Thieves, and all manner of services are sported by the members and inhabitants of these mysterious places hidden in plain sight. To be apart of the Court, you must earn your keep by preforming your Miracles, our name for impressive and unique feats, to those willing to pay and more importantly, ask. Any world that considers itself a power in the Grand scene of things has at least one entry into this mysterious community of double-dealing and strange neutrality. None are refused of their requests, be they poor beggars or wealthy lords and each deal is unique with varying prices, tactics, and results. Each world's Court focuses on different areas of expertise. For the sake of time, let's focus on the Valencian Court.
The Valencian-Monquistan Court is the largest branch on the society and used to be the major source of intrigue in both worlds before the Polarian War. Nowadays, they are down, but not out, still doing their business within most City States. Their seat of power (aside from Polaris) is in the catacombs of Florenzia, though outposts are still widespread. Though not as powerful as before, they still hold sway over connections, blackmail, and other things as to still be a force worth reckoning.
Hope that clears things up an if you want to give suggestions or ideas, please let me know. I'm still developing the idea and would appreciate your info.

to put it simply, the Court is a group of people, each one specializing in a certain craft, who know no boundaries and are perfectly willing to help any one willing to pay and, more importantly, ask.

Is it sort of like some of the Rosicrucians, providing a society for free exchange of information and determined altruism? [in their case, I believe it was providing medical help of the time on a sliding scale or for free if necessary, though my memory is a bit fuzzy on this] Or is it a more ninja-like secret society, willing to spy or even assassinate for who ever asks?

Oh I wish I could see your ballet. I am so jealous . To be involved in such beauty takes so much talent and time. I am surprised you are here as much as you are. I hope all the performances go off without a hitch and the rush and joy of opening night erases all the pain of rehearsals.

The Cour des Miracles is more of a counter-society where oppressed people of all sorts could find sanctuary form the outside world. Because of this, the Court is very unsocial and continues their business subtly and normally keep to themselves. Soon however, the Court realized that the various unique talents of many of the inhabitants could help with the survival of the society. So, there we were subtly made known in order to help those in deed of out of the ordinary favors, feats, and various jobs at negotiated prices form gold to dried herbs. Be warned, however, the Court is strictly neutral and will not get itself into the major conflicts of Imperial Powers unless the Power spoken are enemies with the Court ( the Armada, for example). Also there are two problems that occur: you must be brave (or desperate) enough to ask, and you need to find the entrance to the Cour Des Miracles itself, no easy task. However, if you can have a person in the Court's protection or influence, your odds at succeeding the latter complication is seriously high. My Pirates met each other in the Court and know most if not all the entrances and outposts.
To put it simply again, the Court keeps to itself though it's open to deals behind closed doors if you can find the entrances to them.

There ye have it. I would like to see where ye take this place.

Break a leg at your performance (theatrically speaking)!

It was now time to leave for the ball. The Vinaldi children took leave of their new friends with affection and concern, and there were tears as they embraced their mother. Duchessa Alcina Vinaldi could have no double to take her part, and while the pirate girls and the boy from the Resistance had assured the family over and over that they were perfectly capable of handling any threat, the mother was acutely vulnerable. Alcina calmly reiterated that this was a necessary risk, she would be careful, but she certainly was not going to leave these brave volunteers to risk their lives on their own. Still, despite her bracing words, everyone knew there was a possibility that mother and children might never see each other again.

Then they were journeying to the city of Padova in the Vinaldi's mechanical carriage. Being guests of the Vinaldi's, the pirates had quickly learned that the Valencians were fascinated with devices. This ranged from toys -- like Kara's most precious toy, a beautiful doll that would play the hammered dulcimer when its mechanism was wound-- to practical items like a bath that would automatically fill with hot and cold water when you turned the taps on. Anne, whose baths had been hot if she was willing to spend time heating pots of water on the stove or hearth, or bracingly cold if she just stood in the tin tub and poured the water over herself, thought the bath was a particularly delightful invention. The horse-less carriage was another instance of Valencian ingenuity. It was old-fashioned by Valencian standards, not having the speed and some conveniences of newer models, but provided a smooth and quiet journey, the clicking of the gears fading to mere background noise. They had to stop once when the clockwork mechanism ran down, and the coachman and footmen wound it up again, but soon they were in Padova city and at the door of Dona Graziella's townhouse.

(Already?! Well, now seems to be the perfect time to "reveal" myself, so to speak.)

On the night of the Ball, Omar was wearing an iridescent purple vest over a baggy red undershirt. His legs were covered with a pair of loose forrest green pants while his boots were those of a colorful jester with the tips like the brass-covered shoes from the Tribal Pack. He also wore a knee-length coat whose mantle looked like obsidian black feathers and the rest like large leaves in an array of autumn hues.
If you think that was overly extravagant, the other musicians were just as colorful, even Aloetti, whose pied clothing gave off a slight sent of mistica to Omar. Then again, vagabonds like his musical companion (who was playing the mandolin for the ball) usually fall into those sort of things every now and then. The rehearsals went well and Omar was plased on one of the flanks, much to his liking.
However, there were a few bumps. First, the collection of music he found was missing from the library. Second, the Dona's handmaiden was eyeing him, like she didn't trust him. Third, Maria and Alexander visited him in the library as the Dona's coach rolled in.

Omar was collecting his Charmer's Flute (a Krokotopian instrument that was like a recorder and his preferred choice of music for several reasons) when the fire in the library flared up and spun itself into a vortex of flame. Omar got into a battle stance, his arms engulfed in orbs of purple electricity, but the flames stayed within the hearth. From the flames stepped a boy in Signore Fonte's regalia and a unicorn girl in a simple, but elegant lavender gown. Omar recognizes the two instantly through their disguises.
"Well, well well" Omar said sarcastically "The Hoodoo Queen and the Jesting Lord, come to my presence. So, Maria, Alexander, what do you want?"
"Aww Omar," said Hobbes playfully "Lighten up. Were all going to the Ball and should at least know who of the Court was coming."
"True." cooed Maria "Also, it's been a long time since we were on a quest together. Where's your sense of adventure?"
Omar was about to object, but instead agreed with Maria and Alexander.
"So, what's a brewing in Padova?"asked Omar "You two would not just be here for the Ball."
"There might be a trap set for the Vinaldi House." answered Maria, worried.
"What! But they have not done business with Us for over a year now."
"They have worked for the Resistance, though." Spoke Alex grimly.
"Ae caramba," moaned Omar "Do they ever stop being patriotic? Well, do they know?"
"Oh, yes." assured Hobbes "Ol' Grazziella warned them and they have a plan, though I don't know what."
"My clue, however, would most likely bring us together and maybe we could be apart of the plan as a king od escape" said Maria gleefully.
"Clue! What clue?"spoke Omar and Hobbes.
Their answer was the library door slammed open by the Vinaldis and the Dona, lead by Chrissy, who's Knowings had been triggered by the magic that has been cast by the trio.

The young human blonde girl with apparently no name stood demurely before a grand oak desk. Her hands were clasped respectfully behind her back and her head was lowered submissively as her report was regarded by her employer. "I do not pay you for opinions, young lady, I desire only facts from you." From behind the desk the voice was soft, though authoritative.

"I can only give you my observations and surmizes, your Eminence," she responded. "I believe this pirate can be counted on to behave in such a way as I reported, that is to say, he will do practically anything to hurt the Armada."

"Hmmm... perhaps that is all to the well and good. This Throckmorton and his librarian suspect nothing?"

"No, you Eminence."

"Very well, continue your surveillance and shepherd them as directed. That is all."

And with that pronouncement, the girl was dismissed. She bowed low and backed out of the chamber. How she had gotten herself into this situation we may never know, but for now she was stuck doing as she was told if she wished to eat and sleep somewhere besides the gutter. Now for the first time in her short life she was feeling pangs of conscience. Throwing a knife at that Unicorn lady had felt... wrong somehow. Besides it was her head that would be the first on the chopping block if something unplanned occured. But she had made contingency plans to bail long before that happened. She could stow away on one of the many ships docked for the party - there was no way they could all be searched, particularly for someone as relatively unimportant as her. Not with Duca Vinaldi still absent. She stopped off at the kitchens to snag some cheese and bread before returning the the streets of Padova.

It was a pity she would probably have to leave the city soon, she really quite liked it. So full of history and hidden places and people. But her intuition told her that her remaining time here was not long, and she wished to leave on her own terms, rather than in a box.

Chrissy had a strong wave of what she called her "Knowing" when she looked up and saw the musician that had been playing the music box tune watching them from the window of his quarters given to him by Dona Graziella and just from it's mental flavor she knew he had to be the source of magic she had felt earlier. He quick eyes noticed his reaction and she knew that he now knew she was more that just casually aware of him. As soon as they stepped into the entryway she signaled the Dona and told her of her suspicions. She also told her that what she sensed was strong but strangely neutral. She could not tell her if harm was intended, only that there was strong magic around him. The Dona signaled her into her office and she asked Chrissy to please explain her gift and how far away she had to be to monitor someone. Chrissy explained that distance didn't matter if magic was sent in her direction but that to stay connected with someone magical she needed to just stay quiet and stay focused on them. Dona Graziella thought a moment and asked her if she could please stay at her home as long as the musician was there and she would give her light duties that would allow her to stick close to her and yet stay focused on what could be a threat. Things stayed fairly calm with her knowings only slightly rising when Omar was in the same room with her. Chrissy watched him carefully while pretending to be busy with ball preparations. The Donna kept Chrissy as near as she could and watched for a signal from her if anything changed.
Chrissy was in Donna Graziella's room and they were having a delightful time getting dressed. Chrissy was having fun because she had never worn such finery in her life and had to be taught how some of it worked and the Donna was highly amused at her fumblings. Suddenly Chrissy nearly fainted with the strength of power she felt. She staggered and the look of alarm on her face alerted the Dona. "Hurry" she gasped and ran from the room.

OOC Oh Anne, this is delightful. Clockwork carriages that have to be re wound, lol. What a wonderful imagination you have. I just love it. And what lady pirate wouldn't love the baths? I was going to incorporate Chrissy's luxerating in them but alas I ran out of room. Truly fantastic.

As Omar prepared to see what the Vinaldis and the Dona, had to say, he absently checked a purse he'd been tossed by a girl, when he'd been playing by the fountain. It was not the copper coins he'd expected to see. It was filled to the top with gold.

At the Doge's palace service entrance, the last of the supplies and food for the ball were being delivered. A water mole and his porter were at the front of the line to be searched by a clockwork. The water mole was very enthused to show off his produce, being a regular walking advertizement for Rapa Nui and Skull Island pineapples. A couple of Monquistan nobles made a fuss about something, even the seargant Secundus's logic couldn't follow what the Duke was saying. He called some of his men over, allowing the disappointed water mole to enter without the chance to extoll the full glory of his produce.
Inside the cellar storeroom, Calamity and Rhomba set down their "pineapple" boxes, full of bombs (with a few pineapples on top). "I don't know what the resistance might have in mind for these, but I'm glad our part is done. Let's go Rhomba."
Rhomba smiled, "Resistance Like pineapples? Good Resistance. They smart. Pineapples good." His captain just looked at him shaking her head and smiling as she led him out of the palace and back into the crowds where they faded into the general activity.

Dona Graziella was notified by her butler when the Vinaldi carriage approached, and hastened out to meet them. She knew she was placing herself now at high risk and risking her covert Resistance work by openly welcoming Duchessa Vinaldi into her house, especially should the Doge find out about the trick played upon him regarding the Vinaldi children. But then again, to not serve as hostess in town for the Vinaldis would also be suspicious, as they were known friends. Graziella shook her head impatiently. All this intrigue made it hard to know what was the right thing to do. So she simply chose the path that seemed the most right.

Graziella welcomed them all warmly, never betraying by a flicker of an eye that the Vinaldi children were other than they seemed. There the pirates once again were all re-united, but carefully stayed in their roles, the warmth of their glances expressing their friendship and relief to be together again.

However, they did not have to keep all feelings at bay for long. Graziella had them served tea, lemonade, and cakes in her parlor, and then politely dismissed the servants. Once they were all alone, Graziella rose from her chair and, with a bit of a secret smile, opened a door to an adjoining drawing room.

From the drawing room entered Maestra Lia. She looked rather pale and weary, with much of the liveliness drawn away from her face and manners, but her smile was warm and bright as she looked upon Graziella's guests.

Chrissy and Jack had known, of course, being in Dona Graziella's house. Chrissy smiled indulgently as she heard the joyful exclaimations of her friends as they eagerly jumped to their feet, and the more decorous but just as sincere greetings from Alcina Vinaldi. She was just about to bring herself into the general festivities when a sudden peculiar feeling shuddered through her. Magic! Someone was using magic, she could feel it. The pulse seemed to come from above her. Chrissy moved towards the door, and gave an urgent look to Graziella. Graziella started in surprise, but with a graceful excuse to Alcina, moved towards Chrissy with calm serenity.

Her words were anything but serene, rather gravely concerned and not a little frightened. "What is it, Chrissy?"

Chrissy quickly told her. Graziella was astonished. How did this young blonde human know these things? Graziella herself at felt nothing, but now felt a twinge of deep alarm, more than mere fear of an intruder. The music book! Graziella suddenly feared for its safety. The two women rushed to the upstairs drawing room, which served as Graziella's music room.

Immediately, the mask seemed to spread all over his body, turning him into lord Alexanros Fonte of Sienna. He quickly retreated to the nook next to the door, ready for a surprise to startle all (his specialty).

Maria took a more eerie approach. She went to a full length mirror opposite the door, spoke a short spell, and gazed into her reflection. Instead of her unicorn reflection, it was...different. Omar was floating crossed-legs in the middle of the room, his coat an inch or two off the ground. A circle inscribed with obscure runes faintly was visible from the floor. His eyes were hidden under the wide brim of his plumed hat while his arms were folded, his right arm covering his left arm for...reasons

Chrissy moved with a speed and grace that surprised Dona Graziella. She had been so used to seeing her as the quite and demure maid that she had forgotten that she was a trained fighter. Chrissy stepped into the room first with her sword drawn and almost lost her balance from the pressure of the intense 'knowing' that swirled around her. She looked at the two in the room and knew that someone was hiding. She didn't look twice at Omar's floating trick since she knew that strong witchcraft was here and that was a fairly common witch trick she had seen many times. She couldn't quite see through the magic that was changing what was truth but she could see power waves emanating from the two she could see and she clearly saw the power wake just fading that was telling her someone was in the nook and magic was clearly pulsating from there. She placed herself so that she could keep a line of sight on all three power centers and called out a warning to Graziella. "Take care My Lady, I cannot see through the magic but I am strongly sensing great deception. Things are not as they seem. Do not trust your eyes, much has been disguised." Chrissy could not sense true danger but the great attempt to deceive unnerved her and blocked any thoughts of trusting them. Chrissy was no rookie when it came to witchcraft defense and quickly finished the spells she had started as they rushed to the library and had a strong dome of protection over her and Graziella. She immediately started adding to it as the commotion had not gone unnoticed by her pirate allies for an instant and they had followed them through the house and her dome of protection quickly settled over each of her friends. Her protection was strong but was taking all her focus so if any magical fighting was going to be required it would have to come from someone else. Chrissy's eyes darted to her friends hoping that a fellow fighter properly trained in witchcraft could also sense what was going on and take a cue from her to get ready, just in case.

Graziella flung open the drawing room door. She was not yet versed enough in intrigue to be aware of Alexander, behind the door, but she was skillful in the ways of politics and realized in an instant that the other two people in the room were known to each other and allied together. Graziella blinked as she observed Omar levitating, but quickly recovered to address him.

"You are indeed the one. I thought so yesterday, but forgive me, I could not be sure. I have been entrusted to give something to you." Graziella crossed the room to the cabinet which held a large collection of madrigal part books, innumerable sheet music, and several books on music theory. Her fingers quickly rifled through a section, looking for a thin volume.

Graziella paled. "The music book! It's gone!"
